Organization: Mississauga Recreation and Parks

Date: May 6, 2011

Location: Loyola underpass (3566 South Common Court,Mississauga,ON)

Facilitator: Hazel McColl, Parks and Forestry Coordinator; Anna Ferguson, Mentor Artist

About the Organization: The Mississauga Recreation and Parks department is monumental in developing parks and urban parks by giving access to trails, bridges, playgrounds, sports facilities, etc. It also plays a key role in preserving the natural beauty of parks in Mississauga.

Tasks: The HELP class assisted with the repainting of the Loyola underpass mural.

The Loyola underpass is a site of beautiful mural paintings. Over time, the murals still look fantastic but paint has degraded and vandalism is a common sight. By being involved in repainting the murals and even adding more paintings, we have helped re-established the underpass as a destination rather than just a path. The thing about mural paints is it “can transform a less than desirable space into a bright, inviting space”. It has also helped with students of Loyola Secondary School to have a place where they can hang out and almost adopt the underpass as their own (the murals exhibit Loyola spirit through the school’s mascot and representation of the student demographic). The area is much cleaner and attractive after the make-over. I have even been made aware of the positive compliments of the new-look underpass.
